Bug-fixing and optimizations for the new layout. In particular, Denise optimized the Visor animation from 51MB to 163 KB. THAT'S INSANE.

Welcome to the most massive update Rigelatin has ever received in its 15 years of life! For my participation to the Our Kingdoms Eternal site marathon, I wanted to align the main Rigelatin site with my goals about fansite-making, which is to move away from the impression of my fansites as static informational essays to be read passively, and towards what I want out of this: conversation, interaction, dialogue!!

So for that purpose I made...

  1. ... A new layout for the main site! Featuring Visor from Quake III Arena / Champions. As you can see, it's positively monumental. I've never made anything like this before. Utter maximalism, there are little interactive details all over the page, so many that you may not even discover them all. Not to mention the insanely animated Visor artwork that I've made for it. That one is interactive too, but only you can discover how...

The project section has changed very little from the previous version; what has changed dramatically is the website presentation and mood. I hope it places Rigelatin as what it really is, which is, a fucking mess made from vibrating passion, not a clean and tidy glass case. And most importantly, it's made to interact with it! Interact! Interact!

  2. ...Speaking of interacting, Rigelatin now has a guestbook! As I wrote all over the site, this guestbook is to be taken as a site-wide comment section and you can and should write as many messages as you want whenever you're visiting Rigelatin. I fully expect you to leave a message there after you're done reading here :D

  3. ...Also speaking of interacting, I made a contact page for Rigelatin, so that I may link to this page in each about sections of each sub-site. It's just a web form, but I understand that nowadays people may not take the time to open their email inbox and paste in an address.

  4. ...And, naturally, the (gestures all around)! Wow! Look at this! The update log has never looked so good!

The update log is now located in its own directory, /updates. It now uses Stairwell, which enables it to have a proper tag system. That will be useful in the future, since the plan is to use this as a centralized update blog for every site hosted on Rigelatin. Previously, over here I mostly logged updates concerning the main Rigelatin site, while updates on each individual inner site were usually only logged there. The reason for this was because I fucking forgot. But now I've made a whole layout, and I now SOLEMNLY PROMISE that I will remember to use the update log. If I forget, I will add a tally next to Slash up there, representing the number of her middle fingers that are actually directed to me.

I mentioned that this update blog now runs on Stairwell. That's the system that Denise has been working on for the last 10 years, which powers Staircase Spirit and many of our more recent projects; it's a fantastic little CMS that bridges hand-coded HTML and CSS with more modern functions such as article pagination and tags. Denise has also joined the site marathon with the intention to finally release Stairwell to the world, so that's another awesome upcoming thing.

Now go sign the guestbook!

As per the obnoxious sticker I made, Rigelatin will be participating to Our Kingdoms Eternal site marathon. I'll be revamping the layout, making a new contact page, a new guestbook, and possibly revamping this update thingy too... Also as per the obnoxious sticker I made, the keywords are Visor and Crotch. See you later :D

New site! The Unforgotten. See the description on the main site to (begin to) understand. Hey, now Rigelatin has a site about the character who's in the layout currently! Whee!

Also updated some information on the main site. You'll see that the last update date for many of the featured websites is 2025 - so look around, there has been a lot of new content :)

21 10 25

I came here to correct the last updated date on the main page saying 2024 instead of 2025. I don't know what year it is anymore. Since I was at it I corrected some information, cleared one dead link, and added a link to the brandy new Rigelatin tumblr outpost.

The PHP parts of the site were horribly slow, so we did some server upgrades, but naturally those resulted in brand new problems that we're fixing. So far Denise fixed anything that runs on Stairwell on this site, which is Staircase Spirit and her art site; as far as we've tested now everything is fine on those, so if you encounter anything weird, it's something that we're not aware of, so let us know. We are aware of a few issues with some other websites which we're working on (particularly the JRPG generator), so no need to alert us about those.

(Technical talk incoming): Changed the column parts of the main domain layout from CSS columns to flex because, even though columns should have been more than enough for this case, there are some pretty major browser bugs with handling text in columns. We spent an entire night debugging what in the hell was happening with some code that was really extremely basic and shouldn't have posed any problem... it was an interaction of the column layout in Firefox with the plain text, possibly caused by what appear to be two separate regressions on...

...you know what, the CSS columns have always been kind of flimsily-supported by browsers in general, so let's switch that entire thing to flex. I would rather use columns instead of flex for small things (why use a cannon when the flyswatter would do, liked to say my high school math teacher on the topic of choosing your methods), but hear my advice fueled by almost 15 years of chronically smacking my head against the issues with columns: best not to use CSS columns (column-count) for anything more complicated than columning a simple list of items. Sigh.

The entire CSS was rebuilt from zero, so if anything doesn't look right, please do let me know.

Tidied up the main domain page:

  1. Revised the FAQ a little

  2. Fixed some dead links

  3. Re-added a link to the banners page; it had been unlinked because I thought nobody would have ever used those ever again, but lately I've been seeing a resurgence of the humble 88x31 buttons. Nice.

  4. Mournfully, cleared a few more domain links from the friends link list

  5. Made the site-presentation images also link to the sites

  6. Improved how the main site looks on mobile and tablets. Further updates of that sort will come to the internal sites. I just got a tablet to test them on.

Also, it might not be clear, but the fact that updates on the main site are (looks at dates) somewhat sparse does not mean that there aren't updates going on within the internal sites. Actually, we work on projects for Rigelatin pretty consistently. For example, we've done a lot of work for Staircase Spirit in these last few years, so if you want to see some newer stuff from us, consider checking in there. In fact, we don't even report updates for Staircase Spirit in here because they'd be too many - easier to poke in and look, generally we have something new every other month or so.

I would have made the layout around Orbb, but mint and violet are just not my colors.
